Barnsley Patient Council

What is the Patient Council?

Barnsley Patient Council was established to act as an independent advisory panel and was set up before the CCG existed. As it developed and the CCG was launched, the Patient Council continues to meet and is now made up of representatives from GP practice patient participation groups.

It is just one of many patient, service user and public forums you may be interested in.

Where and when?

The Patient Council usually meets every month.

Pre -pandemic - The meetings were held at the CCG offices - Hillder House, 49 -51 Gawber Road, Barnsley, S75 2PY from 6pm - 7.30pm. There is free parking on site, lock ups if you are travelling by cycle and the main bus stops for Barnsley Hospital are just next to our building. We're a 15 minute walk from the town centre.

Current meetings - Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, our monthly meetings have moved online and will currently take place via Zoom for the foreseeable future.  They are slightly shorter meetings taking place for an hour between 6pm and 7pm.

If you would like to attend a future Patient Council meeting please contact Angela Musgrave on 01226 433742 or email angela.musgrave@nhs.net

What does the Patient Council talk about and influence?

Lots of things! All the notes and presentations from the meetings are available to view here. Because the Patient Council are just one group of people we talk to and work alongside, you can also see the impact of their feedback in the past opportunities section of our website.

The purpose of Barnsley Patient Council is to ensure the patient and those communities and populations served by the CCG have a voice which is heard in the development and delivery of services.  It will work with the CCG to improve health care services and to ensure high quality and sustainable health care by putting the people of Barnsley first.  It is just one of the ways you can get involved in helping improving the health of people in Barnsley.

The purpose is achieved by:

  • Acting as the ‘voice of the public’ ensuring that the experience, perceptions, aspirations and fears of local people are gathered and utilised in assessing the current services.
  • Being visible and developing constructive relationships with the membership of Our Public Engagement Network (OPEN).
  • Promoting the value of public engagement.
  • Continuing to work with relevant local groups and forums to actively seek feedback to feed into the commissioning decision making process.
  • Working in partnership with key stakeholders to secure and prioritise the best healthcare for the needs of the population of Barnsley.
  • Sharing views and opinions on local health services via consultations, engagement and any issues affecting the continuity of service delivery.
  • Participating in service specific focus groups.
  • Receiving and considering relevant policies/reports and provide feedback where necessary.
  • Reviewing patient and staff satisfaction surveys, complaints, concerns and compliments.
  • Receiving feedback from CCG Governing Body and Public & Patient Engagement Committee on Patient Council recommendations.
  • Considering the implications of the Equality Act 2010 on the delivery of health and social care to the local community.
