BeCancerSafe up for national award

BeCancerSafe up for national award
01 April 2019

Be Cancer SAFE in Barnsley and Rotherham was shortlisted at the inaugural NAVCA Awards, recognising the programme’s innovative ‘social movement’ in the area over the last 12 months.

The Be Cancer SAFE programme supports early diagnosis, creating a social movement in cancer prevention, awareness and support.

Here in Barnsley more than 2600 local people have signed up to become ‘Cancer Champions’ and are spreading the word, taking health messages to communities, demystify screening and raising awareness of signs and symptoms.

Barnsley’s cancer champions are made up of small community groups, formal Voluntary and Community Sector Organisations, public sector partners, businesses big and small and individuals from all walks of life who are committed to their own self-care and supporting others within their communities to take control of their own health.

Dr Nick Balac, Chair of NHS Barnsley CCG said: “This is great news for Barnsley. The cancer champions across the borough are doing a great job out in communities, talking about signs and symptoms, raising awareness and highlighting the importance of early diagnosis.”

The winners were announced at an awards ceremony during the evening of 19 March 2019, at St Bride’s in London and although the team weren’t lucky on the night, it is still great recognition of the Barnsley Cancer Champions’ achievements over the last year.
