GP retires after 20 years in Barnsley

GP retires after 20 years in Barnsley
15 July 2020

Barnsley GP, Dr Saxena, retires at the end of August after 20 years working from her surgeries in Cudworth and Grimethorpe.

NHS Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group hold the contracts for GP practices in Barnsley and is now working with patients to ensure they re-register with a new GP practice, before The Caxton House surgeries close at the end of August following Dr Saxena’s retirement.

Just under 1000 patients are registered with Dr Saxena, the smallest practice in Barnsley. Following Dr Saxena’s notification of her retirement, NHS Barnsley CCG has reviewed the options available to them. After consideration of the small size of practice, the likelihood of other GPs bidding for the contract and the impact of the current pandemic, it was decided that patients would be asked to re-register with a practice of their choice, in their area.

Julie Frampton, head of primary care at NHS Barnsley CCG said: “We realise this may be worrying for patients but, together with Barnsley GP practices, we will support you to make this a smooth transfer. We are writing to all Dr Saxena’s patient with full contact details of all the practices in the area, together with information about how to re-register.

“We’re asking patients to do this as soon as possible so we can make sure there is a transfer before Dr Saxena retires and her practice closes on 31st August. We’d like to wish Dr Saxena all the best for her retirement.”

There are a number of alternative GP practices in Cudworth and Grimethorpe. Patients can register with their choice of practice within the area they live. When someone re-registers at a new GP practice all their GP medical records transfer with them including details of current medication.
