The NHS and council in Barnsley have approved a £2.7million additional investment into a range of health and social care services ahead of this winter.

Health and care organisations across Barnsley and South Yorkshire are prioritising the recruitment of additional staff and resilience of services this winter due to the ongoing high levels of COVID-19 infection rates and the impact that has had on services.

£1.39 million will bring forward the national living wage increase for those working in the care sector across Barnsley. Barnsley Council is already ahead of other areas of the country when it comes to recognising the critical role of those working in care. It is hoped that the increase will boost staff recruitment and help towards increased standards of living for Barnsley employees.

The investment will help improve and sustain vital roles in the community, ensuring people can stay in their own homes longer, leave the hospital safely and in times of need, people can get additional care and support at the right time and in the right place.

Councillor Sir Stephen Houghton CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council, said: “We welcome the additional funding to support work across health and social care. It remains a challenging time, and we will be doing more to build capacity across health and social care, but we hope in the short term, the offer to increase pay to meet the national living wage will support the sector to retain and recruit staff.”

“We are pleased that we were able to work with the sector to deliver £1 above the national living wage for carers in Barnsley in 2019; we remain committed to improving pay, terms and conditions and will continue with our commitment through this funding. Roles across health and social care are invaluable for our communities, and they deliver an essential service within our borough. The pandemic has been a difficult time for the sector, but we must look forward and support the sector to provide the best care and support for Barnsley residents, helping them to get the support and care they need when they need it, so they are able to live well.”

The essential role of the voluntary and community sector has also been recognised with £300k going towards grants which will help provide resilience to those organisations throughout winter. It includes grants for charities and voluntary and community groups to support people who have recently been discharged from hospital.

Often when someone is medically fit to be discharged from hospital, it’s the practical care and support when they get home that helps with their recovery. These services may help to get your home ready for your return and assist with non-medical tasks such as shopping and light housework.

Other items for funding include increasing the number of cervical screening clinics and providing additional support for people with a learning disabilities or autism to attend their screening appointment.

Dr Nick Balac, chair of NHS Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group said: “This funding is going to help us get through a really tough winter. We are doing everything we can to support those people in most need.”
