Barnsley CCG Highly Commended in CCG of the Year 2017
24 November 2017

NHS Barnsley CCG has been highly commended in the CCG of the Year 2017 category at the national Health Service Journal (HSJ) awards.

Barnsley CCG was one of ten finalists shortlisted for the accolade from over 200 CCGs in England. No other CCG was highly commended in this category.

The CCG of the Year 2017 award celebrates organisations making the most of opportunities and overcoming challenges. It recognises CCGs in which clinicians are truly leading; organisations that are starting to build truly joined-up care across their geographic patches; and commissioners with an unwavering focus on patient care.

Lesley Smith, Chief Officer at NHS Barnsley CCG, said: “We are incredibly proud to be highly commended for this prestigious national award. To have Barnsley recognised as one of the top CCGs in the country is an incredible achievement. It shows that together with all the local health and care organisations, we are having a real impact on people’s health and for us that is what really matters.”

Dr Nick Balac, Chair Barnsley CCG said: “This year we’ve focused a lot on improving the range of mental health and wellbeing support available in schools for young people and their families. We’re hearing from teachers, students and parents that this is starting to have a positive impact. We have also introduced the iHeart Barnsley 365 service, giving people access to more GP appointments, particularly in the evening and over the weekend.

"We’ve got some of the best treatment rates for cancer in the country and the different services we have put in place to support people, so they don’t end up in A&E, are starting to make a difference. These things don’t happen overnight and I’d like to thank our dedicated commissioners, as well as  all the health and care staff committed to working alongside Barnsley people to improve health.

"I'd also like to thank the Barnsley CCG member GP practices for their hard work and support in delivering services and improving outcomes for the people of Barnsley and making this achievement possible”
