This accessibility statement applies to www.barnsleyccg.nhs.uk

This website is run by NHS Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group, often called Barnsley CCG.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website.

For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
  • live video streams do not have captions
  • you cannot access the whole of the main navigation with just a keyboard
  • some content is too small to read (under 10px)
  • hover and focus states are not always clear
  • link text often lacks context e.g. “Read more"

Technical information about this website's accessibility

NHS Barnsley CCG is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard. The non-compliances and exemptions are listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulation
some images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information.
This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content). We plan to add text alternatives for all images by October 2020. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of images meets accessibility standards.

On some pages there is video content which does not have equivalent content in text form.
This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.2.1 (Audio only and Video only - Pre-recorded)
We plan to add content equivalent to our video content by October 2020. When we publish new video content we’ll make sure to publish a text equivalent to meet accessibility standards.

On some pages link text are ambiguous meaning they lack context for screen reader users such as displaying multiple “Read more” links.
This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 (Link Purpose)
We plan to review link text by October 2020. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of links meets accessibility standards.

Some pages contain images which convey information through text within the image. This should be avoided unless they are decorative and have equivalent text alongside them.
This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.5 (Images of text)
We plan to add equivalent text to these images October 2020. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of images meets accessibility standards.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services. For example, we have PDFs with information on how users can access our services, and forms published as Word documents. By October 2020, we plan to either fix these or replace them with accessible HTML pages.

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.  Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

Live video

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

Our accessibility roadmap will be published in October 2020 to demonstrate how and when we plan to improve accessibility on this website.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared in September 2020. It was last reviewed in September 2020.

This statement was prepared as part of the initial work to move towards accessibility compliance. More pages will be tested and any issues addressed once the main issues affecting widely used templates have been addressed. Further testing will also be done to ensure that newly published content is accessible.

Making your health and care information accessible

NHS England has produced information in various formats which summaries what organisations are required to do to comply with the Accessible Information Standard. Here is a short summary document which provides an overview of the Standard for patients, service users, carers and parents. This is available in a range of formats.

Our website displays some of our key documents also in Easy Read format for people who prefer a straightforward summary in plain language.

We also offer information in accessible formats if you take part in one of our get involved events, or procurement panels as well as any other support you may need to take part.

BrowseAloud

To make our website more accessible the CCG's website includes computer software called BrowseAloud. It can help anyone who has difficulty reading online including people with mild visual impairments, where English is not their first language or a learning disability such as dyslexia.

You can use Browsealoud on any page of the CCG website. Click on the orange button first to open up the different options. The button is usually at the top right of each page, with a picture of some earphones and the letter b. Once you have opened this, you can click on the different options. You can also use these on documents published on our site.

Using text only on this website

You can change the text and background colour by selecting the text only option which is available at the top of all our pages. You can then choose the following options:

  • yellow text on black background;
  • black text on a white background;
  • white text on a blue background; or
  • black text on a cream background.

Translating this website

You can translate most pages of this website. This can be either by clicking on the BrowseAloud button at the top right of the page, or by using Google Translate, into more than 90 languages by clicking the ‘translate’ link at the bottom of the page and selecting your language. You will need Javascript enabled for this to work.

The translation is done by Google Translate, which is a ‘machine translation’ engine that uses mathematical algorithms when translating. As a result, the translated text is not of the same quality as if it had been translated by a human translator. This also means that there is a difference in quality of translation between the languages.

However, as the technology behind Google Translate improves, the quality of the translation will improve too.
